Grilled at Bloblive – An Open Mic Night for Entrepreneurs

Erick Brownstein seemed to be wearing a bit tired, holding the mic in his right hand for the majority of the evening. An observant on-line viewer delivered as if on cue.

“Maybe Erick should change hands so his wrist can take a break.”

The comment draws a few chuckles from an already relaxed crowd.

Brownstein is the Los Angeles emcee for Bloblive, a program that facilitates a series of open mic nights for entrepreneurs. Perhaps the evening is a bit ironic as the event is hosted at the trendy Daily Grill off of 6th and Flower, situated amidst several large corporations.

Brownstein is interviewing an older gentleman seeking advice on some carpentry. Continue reading Grilled at Bloblive – An Open Mic Night for Entrepreneurs

Hello Wine Lovers

While working in the wine sales side of the grocery industry once in a while a special training opportunity comes my way. This trip was to the Bealeiu Vineyards The BV house was amazing it’s a 1920’s bungalow style mansion 10,000 square feet of living space. It was built for George and his wife owners of BV. We had a wonderful tasting of Chalone wines and of BV wines as well. We were shown how the glass the wine is served in could change the entire experience of the wine. George Reidel once said to me that “ perception is everything!” Continue reading Hello Wine Lovers

Bottega Louie Very Grand Opening

“Hey, do you want to come with me to the Bottega Louie party tonight?”

“I’m down behind the OC curtain…Maybe.”

“So, you’re being noncommittal?” I said this with some boss like disgust—to make the point that not going with me was not an option.

            “I’ll go.”

“Be at my place at four-thirty.” I hung up on Shannon (downtownster senior writer).  My girlfriend had a late class at school that she could not, not attend and the thought of walking around the Grand Opening soirée being thrown at Bottega Louie without a chaperone was a akin to teasing a tiger at the San Francisco Zoo. Meaning, that I was reasonably confident that there would be attractive members of the opposite sex at this bash and I have a particularly strong appetite for troublemakers who like to tease me.

At this juncture let me advise you to read my blog of last week simply titled Bottega Louie. I was effusive in my praise of this game changer of a restaurant. In short the trial I was blessed enough to attend could be summarized as such: the space is a masterpiece, the food is perfection, and the prices beyond reasonable. The party was really just a formality for me to attend—I knew what to expect.

I spent the day suited up for the occasion in my black suit and classic brown tie—I call this my Capote look. I know that I have absolutely zero resemblance to Truman Capote, but I’m referring to the era, which people still dressed with some class, in the classical sense. Bottega Louie makes all who enter want to look good. And isn’t it time we all start to dress again? So with the trusty Shannon on my arm I checked in with the polite young man at the door and entered. Continue reading Bottega Louie Very Grand Opening

Homeboy Industries

I’m walking up Alameda around four in the afternoon.  The traffic is already somewhat heavy during the rush hour, and the breeze is very pleasant.  I had just felt like taking a stroll, so I pass Union Station and Olvera Street, then the Post Office.  Philippe’s is on my left.  I pass the California Endowment Center, then Starlight Nails and Beauty Salon.  Across the street is Los Angeles Fleet Services, yellow taxicabs in constant motion in and around the building.  I’m nearing my destination, Homeboy Industries. Hello Wine Lovers

Well it’s Saturday and I am ready for another wine tasting at Ralphs tonight 5pm to 8pm. Tonight, we’ll be tasting Sparkling wines of California. This is not the same as Champagne due to a law the United States recognizes with France since around 1975, or so, we can’t call sparkling wine Champagne unless it comes from Champagne France.  Now, many bottles can be labeled “Methode Champaniose meaning  it is fermented in bottle the same as a Champagne wine. Hello Wine Lovers

Hello Wine lovers. California being a temperate climate for growing wine grapes allows us to mimic many varietals from the French growing regions. Tonight we will taste the Rhone Valley style wines. Syrah and Grenache and Mouvedre are a few red varietals that are common.  For a white wine there are three types. Marsanne Roussane and Viognier.  These six wines consist of the bulk of what is produced in the Rhone. The valley is divided between the northern region and the southern region along the Rhone River. It might seem strange to taste such velvety white wine in such early Spring, but this wine really delivers a great value and quality all in one. Tonight is Tuesday and at 5pm until 8om At Ralphs we will explore the Region of France known as the Rhone Valley. Continue reading Hello Wine Lovers

Downtown’s Queen of Green

I noticed Minh-Son Dang  within the first few days of moving into my building on 4th and Main.  I’d see her riding her bike to and from the building, standing on a corner in conversation with a fellow downtownster, always mid-laugh or mid-smile, and always wearing green glasses.  What I noticed most was that everyone seemed to like her, and everyone seemed to know her.

After sitting down and having a chat with her at the Old Bank’s Banquette Café I now know why. Continue reading Downtown’s Queen of Green

ISU World Figure Skating Championships–Staples

This LA sports fan has been filled with rivaling emotions over the past few weeks. I just finished agonizing over USC and UCLA men’s basketball teams falling short of the Sweet 16. I’m anticipating another strong finish for the Lakers. I’m still crossing my fingers for those feisty Kings. And I continue to thank a higher power that Manny is back for another year (and not taking up cricket as his full-time gig). I am a mess.

Wait. Hold that thought.

An awe-inspiring distraction has emerged. Perhaps newfound admiration is taking command. Toronto’s Patrick Chan just executed a triple axel. Continue reading ISU World Figure Skating Championships–Staples

“War Child”

I try to attend as many events at Metropolis Books as I can and you should too — starting with this one. The incredible story that follows needs no further commentary; just give it a read and see for yourself.

Emmanuel Jal has won worldwide acclaim for his unique style of hip hop with its message of peace and reconciliation born out of his experiences as a child soldier in Sudan. His music can be heard alongside Coldplay, Gorillaz, and Radiohead on the fund raising ‘Warchild – Help a Day in the Life’ album, as well as in three ER episodes, the National Geographic documentary God Grew Tired of Us, and more recently in the feature film Blood Diamond starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He also featured on John Lennon’s ‘Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur’ amongst the likes of U2, REM and Lenny Kravitz.

Emmanuel Jal was born in war-torn Sudan, and while he doesn’t know exactly when, he believes it was in the early 1980s. He was taken from his family home Continue reading “War Child”

LA LIVE’S SAINT PATRICK’S DAY MASSACRE II

Last week I posted the blog LA LIVE’S SAINT PATRICK’S DAY MASSACRE – which I am now reposting as LA LIVE’S SAINT PATRICK’S DAY MASSACRE II! No, I’m not suffering from writer’s block, I have more things to write about on any given day than I can peck out on the keyboard of my Mac. I’m reposting this blog and will keep doing so until the time that AEG / LA Live comes to the conclusion that becoming the scourge of our community is not a desirable course. I will each week add developments for better or worse in this cause.

Last week several thousand people read my post and then subsequently flooded me with emails and text messages agreeing that AEG / LA Live has completely disappointed the community thus far and was in danger of becoming a disgrace to Downtown rather than an icon. Let me make this perfectly clear; not one single member of the community disagreed with my post. I even heard from friends in West LA who had caught wind of what’s going on…One asked to come down and see for himself…I suggested Saturday day, quite sure, that as usual, the plaza would just be an empty slab of cement. But before this tour was to take place I got an interesting phone call the day after my post.

            “Hi Stan, it’s Mike Roth.”

“Now you’re calling,” I responded to the director of communications for AEG / LA Live.” Continue reading LA LIVE’S SAINT PATRICK’S DAY MASSACRE II
